In 1986 Theatre Group did an unusual production of an adaptation of German playwright Franz Xaver Kroetz’s play without words,Request Concert,and is all about the humdrum existence of an average middle class housewife with Smita Patil and directed by Alyque Padamsee. It was adapted to an Indian setting and called Aap Ki Farmaish. The entire piece did not have a single word of dialogue in it and only came with a set of actions as instructions.

To this Smita Patil had to say: “I honestly had the guts to take up this play because it is totally experimental theatre,”
To me it didn’t feel like theatre; it was the problem I was attracted to. In the play, I’m just communicating.” Patil, however, feels the play belongs to the pavements. “It’s not meant for a normal audience. It should be performed as a street play.”
