At the age of seven, Alyque began his theatre journey with ‘The Merchant Of Venice’. He made his debut in the English Theatre in Mumbai with a well-received production of The Taming Of The Shrew (1954) and went on to create over 77 plays. In his 60-odd years of theatre life, Alyque Padamsee staged plays by acclaimed iconic playwrights such as William Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams as well as popular Indian playwrights such as Girish Karnad, Ismat Chugtai, Vijay Tendulkar and Mahesh Dattani.

Alyque Padamsee is known for doing plays that have great social relevance, especially in his unique productions like ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ (1974), ‘Evita’ (1983), ‘Tara’ (1991), ‘Death And The Maiden’ (1993), ‘Final Solutions’ (1994), and the latest ‘Broken Images’ (2009), which were sensations not only across the country but also across the globe. ‘Broken Images’ went on a national tour in The US cities in 2010 and ran to full houses.

Having realised the significance and power of indigenous writing, he has supported and encouraged Indian playwrights by helping to set up the Theatre Group of Bombay’s Sultan Padamsee Award for playwrighting.
